Cognitive psychology deals with the study of the mental mechanisms that mediate the impact of environment on behavior. These mechanisms involve representations that encode information as well as processes that transform information. Theories about these mechanisms are constructed primarily on the basis of knowledge about how living organisms such as humans and other animals respond to (interventions in) their environment,  including responses in the brain.
