Ethnocultural Identities: Stages, Statuses, or Attitudes?

Frank C. Worrell received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.  He was a faculty member in the School Psychology Program at Penn State for nine years, before joining the faculty at UC Berkeley, where he serves as Faculty Director of the School Psychology Program, the Academic Talent Development Program, and the California College Preparatory Academy.  He also holds an affiliate appointment in the Social and Personality Area in the Department of Psychology.

His areas of expertise include at-risk youth, cultural identities, gifted education and talent development, scale development, time perspective, and the translation of psychological research findings into school-based practice.  He served as Co-Editor of Review of Educational Research with Zeus Leonardo from 2012 to 2014 and as Editor from 2015 to 2016, and was a Member at Large on the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association (APA) from 2016 to 2018.  Dr. Worrell is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and five divisions of APA.  He is an elected member of the Society for the Study of School Psychology and the National Academy of Education.  He received the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence in 2011. 

In 2013, Dr. Worrell was a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the National Association for Gifted Children.  He is also a 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Contributions to Research Award from Division 45 – the Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity, and Race – of APA, a 2016 recipient of the Nadine Lambert Outstanding School Psychologist Award for Region III (the Bay Area) from the California Association of School Psychologists, a 2018 recipient of the Outstanding International Psychologist Award from Division 52 (International Psychology) of APA, and the 2019 recipient of the Palmarium Award in Gifted Education from the University of Denver’s Morgridge College of Education.  Dr. Worrell has ongoing international collaborations in China, Ethiopia, Germany, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
