Turning girls‘ brains pink and boys’ brains blue – the effects of gender stereotypes in education

Christiane Spiel, Univ.-Prof., Mag.rer.nat., Dr.phil, Dr.rer.nat. 

Christiane Spiel studied Mathematics (Mag.rer.nat), History (Dr.phil.), and Psychology (Dr.rer.nat.) at the University of Vienna. She was Senior Researcher at the Max-Planck Institute für Human Development and Education in Berlin and Professor for Applied Psychology at the University of Graz. Since 2000 she is Professor of Bildung-Psychology and Evaluation at the Department of Applied Psychology: Work, Education, Economy at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Vienna. 

Her research topics are on lifelong learning; the future of learning; (cyber)bullying and bullying prevention; gender stereotypes in education; evaluation and intervention research; implementing interventions into public policy. Together with her colleagues she is the founder of Bildung- psychology as a discipline. 

Christiane Spiel has been chair and member of various advisory and editorial boards as e.g., president of the European Society for Developmental Psychology, of the Austrian Psychology Association, and of the DeGEval - Society for Evaluation, (co)editor of the European Journal of Developmental Psychology and the Zeitschrift für Psychology/ Journal of Psychology, coordinating lead author of the chapter on education of the International Panel on Social Progress, and member of the board of directors of the Global Implementation Initiative. She was founding dean of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Vienna. Currently she is e.g., vice-chair of the board of directors of the Wuppertal University, chair of the scientific advisory board of the Austrian Research Association, president of the scientific advisory board for research in vocational and educational training at the Swiss State Secretary for Education, Research, and Innovation. 

Christiane Spiel has chaired more than 40 third party funded projects and published more than 250 original papers. For her achievements, Christiane Spiel got several awards as e.g., the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Arts first class, the Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Franz Emanuel Weinert Award of the German Society for Psychology for outstanding research and knowledge transfer in society, the Science Award of the Margarete Lupac foundation of the Austrian Parliament for Parliamentarism and Democracy, and the Medal of honour of the Leibnitz University Hannover.
